vinny dotolo, jon shook, two dudes one pan, son of a gun, slow cooker recipes, claire robinson 5 ingredient fix, tapas cookbook, grilling cookbookToday I’m sharing my five favorite modern cookbooks in a new series called, The Splendid Five. These are five beautifully designed cookbooks that contain absolutely delicious recipes. And, YES, I own all five of these cookbooks… they are all fantastic!

This weekend I’ll be exercising my cooking chops! I signed up for a knife skills class for my Finding Splendor adventure… These books are gonna get a workout with my new skills.

What are your favorite cookbooks?

The Dirty Dozen :: Laura of The Black Frames

So, my friend Laura (also Hello, Splendor‘s Splendid Men contributor) is pretty much a rockstar.

The Black Frames, Sara Kerens, laura busby, tommy busby, patrick cone, indie music, metro diner

No, litterally. She’s a rockstar!!

Laura is in this amazing new band called The Black Frames and she’s a men’s fashion blogger. So, Aspiring Kennedy & I asked Laura a dozen not-so-dirty questions for our new series:

The Dirty Dozen

1. who are you & what do you do?

I’m Laura, IT Marketing by day, Men’s Fashion Blogger by night.

2. why do you do it?

For one I have to pay my bills. But, I have always taken and interest in men’s fashion. Something me and my college roommate used to talk about a lot. Unlike most people, I size someone up from shoes to shirt. Going this direction can tell you everything you need to know. Trust me. For guys a good outfit starts with good footwear and pants the rest falls into place.  But I have learned so much about blogging and web over the past 3 years, this experience has really helped me out with my day job.

3. who do you do it with?

I co-consipire with one of my bests Lauren. We met when we both moved to Dallas, her from LA, and me from Philadelphia. We had a lot to talk about so we figured we might as well write it down, blog it, dream it, believe it. We really could just write to each other since we were already emailing the same kinds of things.

4. what/who almost stopped you from doing it?

You never know if people care about what you have to say. So at first we were both very reluctant to even post our names or publicize it. A few different friends of ours were like get fb, get twiitter, publicize this. Readers want to know whose talking.

5. what is your blog about?

Men’s fashion. Of course I love women’s, but there are already so many street style blogs, and women with advice about colors and trends. No one was talking about the fellas. I like well-dressed, good looking men. Its the best of both worlds, clothes and attractive dudes. Plus I really think with the right direction, any many can live out his fullest potential in how he presents himself. Plus they only need like 5 things. Women require seasonal overhauls.

6. who reads your blog?

So we really wanted guys that didn’t get it. Come to find they dont read blogs. So most of our readers are women, our friends, and stylish guys that browse our selections or tell us where we should be looking.

You’ll have to head on over to Aspiring Kennedy for the next six!

But first! Check out this super incredible music video by  C1 Entertainment of her band The Black Frames. I mean, who doesn’t like to see a girl rockin’ out the bass??… I’m flabbergasted!

The Splendid List :: Giving Back

the splendid list, giving back

For this Splendid List, I wanted to show some love to some local foundations that bloggers support. I have been having trouble raising funds for my foundation… It’s my 6th year raising funds for my favorite little girl Violet and it hasn’t been easy on the tails of the Japan crisis. So, I thought I’d help highlight some local foundations… If you see anything that tugs at your heartstrings, please donate. Even $5 these days is helpful.

Ultraviolet, cystic fibrosis foundation, violet dixon

Blogger: Beth (ME) of Hello, Splendor

Charity: Team UltraViolet for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

About: This cause is nearest and dearest to my heart! Violet’s Daddy plays bass in El Gato (my hubby’s band), and Mommy heads up Lovie. Violet has Cystic Fibrosis & each year we band together to fight to find a cure for this amazing girl. Please donate to help find a cure for Violet. It’s hard to watch a girl with such spirit go through so much struggle each day, and keep her smile. It would mean more to me than you know.

Charity: The Maddie James Foundation

About: I first learned about Maddie and her family from a close friend who is part of their family. Since first reading about her, not a day has gone by that I have not thought about her. As a parent, once my son turned 2 I kind of let out a big sigh. It felt like we had made it. He had reached a “durable” stage. Learning about Maddie, who was diagnosed this January (age 5) with a malignant, inoperable brain tumor known as Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, or DIPG, was a reminder to me that life is always fragile, and that we need to appreciate and enjoy it, always. Following Maddie and her family has also shown me how strong people can be. I am in awe of the strength this family is showing, and forever touched by the love and togetherness they are giving their sweet daughter during this time. Beyond all of that, I am extremely happy to see this project grow, and I hope one day to visit the Maddie James Seaside Learning Center. I know Bonham will love exploring the ocean as much as Maddie.

*Editor’s Note: Sadly, Maddie passed away on March 13th.

How You Can Help: Donate!

I know everyone gives back in their own way, but I hope this moved at least one person to donate.

Hello, Splendor is all grown up…

blogger vs wordpress

Well, hardly! But, I did upgrade the site… Last week I moved Hello, Splendor from blogger to wordpress! A lot of people have been asking why. Well, there are a few reasons that were important to me:

  1. I wanted complete ownership of my content.
  2. I wanted to do more with Hello, Splendor down the road & add more pages for growth in the future.
  3. Most importantly, I wanted to be able to interact more with those of you who are reading & commenting.

So, I brought in Kendall of Blogs by Kendall. Let me tell you, this girl knows what she’s doing. I could not be more pleased with the process & with the end result. The transfer was seamless!

Here’s what’s different:

blogger to wordpress switch

So, tell me!

What do you think?? Do you like it? Do you miss the old format?

pet costumes: do or don’t?

Hello, lovelies!  As you know, Halloween is right around the corner…which for some means picking out a costume.  It had me thinking:  Are pet costumes cute or cliche?  Although the images above (via) all make me chuckle…I mean, seriously…the sailor?  hippie?  (Nice afro, btw.)  Is it too much?  My dog Tucker says Y-E-S!  I tried to dress him up last year, which he hated.  In an effort to keep him festive he’ll be sporting a Halloween themed tee.

So, what do you think?  Are pet costumes a ‘DO’ or “DON’T”?  Will you be dressing your pet up this year?

Kelly
