In this week’s episode of DMTV Milkshake, Pulp Design Studios’ Beth Dotolo and Carolina V. Gentry chat with us about all the things that make a house a home – that make it a spectacular home, with welcoming ease, a signature scent, smartly (and inexpensively) curated art on the walls, and more.

With offices in Dallas, Seattle and L.A., Dotolo and Gentry don’t only work with clients on creating gorgeous spaces – they also publish the interiors magazine Icon and produce their own line of goods, like their Obsidian candles. That expertise is why we asked them about creating a signature fragrance for your home, a topic that also figured into their response for crafting a welcoming space. “I think that welcoming home always has a signature scent,” Carolina says. Beth adds: “I also think that having a sense of humor in your decor creates a welcoming home, too. If you don’t take yourself too seriously, people don’t feel too serious in your home. I just think it automatically creates a sense of comfort.”

Also in this Milkshake, Carolina and Beth recommend specific sources for their favorite signature scents, how to create a luxurious-feeling bedroom on a budget, and which decorating jobs most people put off, but shouldn’t: “We talk about this with our clients all the time,” Beth says. “A lot of people who have children feel like they can’t design their home yet. They have to wait to buy nice things until their children grow up. If you buy nice things, if you think about the right fabrics, and you think about how to design towards your family – kids are gonna be kids, but also, grownups spill red wine and stuff. You shouldn’t wait until baby grows up to design your home.”

Carolina adds: “I have a cream-colored sofa, and the two big babies that live here – myself and my husband – have managed to keep it nice and clean, and we’ve spilled so many things on it. Just hire a designer who can tell you what fabrics to put in your home.”
