“The initial conversation really centered around creating a home that felt collected, layered and deeply personal, something that didn’t feel overly designed or precious,” shares Carolina Gentry of Pulp Design Studios, who, alongside design firm co-founder Beth Dotolo, worked rigorously to reimagine a couple’s Dallas home. “They wanted it to feel like a true retreat, almost resortlike, but with a personal layer that really reflected who they are.”

The result is a warm and welcoming four-bedroom, five-bathroom residence that feels as relaxed as it does refined. “They were drawn to a relaxed, California-inspired sensibility but still wanted the home to feel grounded and livable for everyday use,” says Gentry. “From the beginning, it was about striking that balance between elevated and effortless, creating spaces that feel layered and soulful, but never cluttered, while ensuring every detail supports how they want to experience the home when they’re there.”

For Gentry and Dotolo, the ultimate goal is to watch the story behind a project unfold. “In the beginning, it’s all about big ideas and vision, but the magic really happens in layering unexpected moments, mixing materials, and choosing pieces that bring personality to the space,” says Gentry. “We love that point in the process where everything starts to feel collected rather than curated, when it shifts from a design plan into a home with soul.”

Soul was certainly at the forefront as the dynamic duo took on this home revamp. Weaving notes of California modern and rustic Mediterranean throughout the 4,400-square-foot space, the pair leaned into the home’s existing natural materials and warm woods as a backdrop while layering in cleaner lines and modern nuances. “The goal was to create tension in a really thoughtful way, refined but relaxed, rustic but elevated,” says Gentry. “That mix of old and new brings depth to the space, allowing it to feel layered and collected over time rather than overly designed or installed all at once.”

The chic space offers optimal entertaining features, including an open floor plan that extends into the dining room, a custom wine bar and a custom breakfast banquette designed for easy lounging and spending time with friends and family. “They wanted a home that felt beautiful but also completely functional for both everyday living and entertaining,” says Gentry. “That meant creating spaces that flow easily, feel intuitive, and don’t require much effort to maintain. The emotional tone was just as important. It needed to feel warm, welcoming, and relaxed, with a sense of ease the moment you walk in.”
