4 Tips for Modern Fresh Interiors

The Pulp Design Studios’ team had a blast designing a Laredo, Texas, space for Anise Kitchen + Market, a new-concept restaurant serving healthy dishes based on fresh veggies and natural foods. We gave  Anise a modern fresh design – one that’s requested a lot in interiors because it’s clean, hip, and offers an oasis in your home!

Here we’ll show you how we designed the modern fresh look, and we’ll give you our top 4 tips for creating the style in your home:

1. Go Green

In color psychology, green creates harmony, balance, and renewal – so it’s a fabulous color to bring into the home. It’s also one of the colors most associate with nature, and in this veggie-centric space, we know it had to be the focal color.

2. Au Naturel

We used a lot of natural wood and other organic materials in Anise to continue that theme of a fresh concept. In your own home, consider using light stains or finishes that allow wood grains to show through. Studies have shown that natural wood gives people a peaceful feeling and adds to that feeling of bringing the outdoors in.

3. Create Space and Light

We wanted to allow every chance we could for light and air to flow through Anise, so we used open-work brick wall dividers and chairs with open backs. Consider moving light through your home this way, or even with mirrors, Lucite furniture, or glass accessories.

4. Live Acts

Garden walls are huge in Europe and Asia right now, and they’re surprisingly easy to create in your own home. If you’re not up for any sort of maintenance or indoor gardening, you can also design garden walls and boxes out of succulents or faux plants that look luxe and live. The wall we created for Anise looks real, but is a low-maintenance faux.

If you’re in Laredo, be sure to visit Anise Kitchen + Market. In the meantime, use these tips to make a modern fresh design in your own home!

Colors to Watch in 2019

We love this time of year, when Colors of the Year are announced by paint companies and color forecasters. We have a unique take on color trends because we travel to cities and shows around the world where we see the latest products and new ideas for the home.

What we’re seeing for 2019 is a palette of muted brights – colors that are highly saturated, but with a tint or shade that makes them more subdued, like this gorgeous blue we used in a winery project.

Muting an intense color makes it classic, polished, and just different enough to stand out, like this toned-down red-orange in a powder room we designed.

Another muted bright we’re loving is an orange with a bit of gray in it. If you’re worried about using a color like that on your walls, consider it for and accent like counter stools in a kitchen, as we did in this family-friendly home.

Or use a toned-down orange on the front door – it’s a perfect complement to the stone exterior on a house we designed in Dallas. Front doors are a great place to experiment with color!

A less-dramatic fuchsia is another favorite of ours, and here it adds just the right punch in a white-and-bright bathroom we designed for DXV.

Yellow can be a super-intense color, but the muted version is less intimidating to consider in your home. It makes a fantastic accent color for the bright green wallpaper in this bathroom.

Greens are definitely going to be big in 2019, especially in the quieter olive or almost khaki shades.

A deep teal is also one to watch. It adds a richness and suppleness, with a bit of mystique, to any color story or space.

6 Dynamic Schemes Using Our Pulp Design Studios for S. Harris Collection

A few weeks ago we shared some  of the amazing schemes using our Pulp Design Studios for S. Harris textile from the design community. We were so inspired to see how fellow designers are incorporating our fabrics into their own designs — each just as unique as the other.

Of course, as we’ve been getting down to work designing for our own clients, we’ve been incorporating the textiles into spaces to add that perfect flair for the unexpected that we love so much. We’ve pulled together a few of our own schemes using the textiles to give you an inside look at what we’ve been up to recently…

6 Wallcoverings You Can Use in Your Bathroom Without Fear

It’s no secret that we love wallcovering at Pulp Design Studios. Our love truly knows no bounds — we use it in bedrooms, living spaces, on the walls, on the ceiling and even in bathrooms.

Yes, you read that right! You can use wallcovering on your bathroom walls without fear of it deteriorating or damaging over time due to humidity and the occasional splash. Before you go crazy plastering up any old paper on your walls, it’s important to look for a few key details when deciding on a bathroom wallcovering. Just like we wouldn’t put a delicate rug in a high traffic entryway, we would never cover our clients’ water-prone walls with something that would be ruined by liquid.

It all comes down to wipeable surfaces. If a wallcovering is wipeable, it’ll likely be perfect for a bathroom setting. It’s designed to withstand contact with liquid, so the humidity from a shower or droplets from a running sink will roll off with no damage in sight! Check out a few of our favorite bathroom-ready wallcoverings…
