Pulp in Progress: A Modern Monochromatic Home in Seattle

As part of our Three-Step Design Process, we are taking you on a tour through projects that are currently in progress. It will be a fun look into who we’re working with, what made them want to hire a designer, and how we are working with our clients to help solve some key design challenges that will improve their daily experience. Plus, you’ll get a glimpse at some of our designs before they’re completed!

Step 1: Consultation + Intake

Q. WHO IS THE CLIENT AND WHAT IS THEIR SCOPE OF WORK?

A busy executive with kids, our client had recently moved into a new home that was designed by a prolific architect in the ’80s, just before the architect passed away — it’s a residence of importance. Our client’s new home was modern, whereas her old home was traditional — so her furnishings didn’t fit with the style of her new home. Starting a new phase of her life, she wanted to redefine what her personal interior style looked like. She reached out to Pulp to help define that through a minor interior facelift and all new furnishings.

Q: WHY DID THE CLIENT DECIDE TO HIRE AN INTERIOR DESIGNER RATHER THAN TAKING THE PROJECT ON THEMSELVES?

In need of a fresh start, our client knew that she wanted to completely refresh her home and her furnishings but didn’t know where to start. On top of juggling both parenting and her job, she just wasn’t sure how to describe her style or to give her home the polished look she wanted. She needed help from a professional in defining her personal style and executing the design, so bringing Pulp on was the perfect solution!

Step Two: The Design Phase

Here’s where we took everything we learned from our client at our consultation and intake process and put all that information and our creativity to work for our clients. We started really getting to know our client and her kids, and what their lifestyle looked like. Then we started by gathering inspiration from our client in the form of a Pinterest board and began to collaborate between our offices on the design.

Q. WHAT IS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE NEW DESIGN?

Our client’s fashion sense, paired with the modern architecture, was really our inspiration here. Designed by a well-known local architect, the bones of this home are clean and modern — our client’s old furniture was highly traditional and didn’t fit her style. Through thorough interviewing and our Splendid Living approach, we found that she was highly drawn to black, white and gray. Her wardrobe consisted of primarily those colors with pops of color thrown in through the accessories, so we knew that designing her home to reflect that aesthetic would be the perfect fit for her and her family.

Step Three: Installation + Execution

We recently installed phase 1 of this hip project and will be completing the final install soon! In the meantime, here’s a little teaser from the first install…
