How To Make A Statement with Lighting When You Have a Low Ceiling

Our interior design clients come to us for a variety of reasons, but they all have had the realization that if they want their space to look bad a** and better than they could imagine, they’ll have to hire a designer. Sometimes it’s a strange living room layout, and other times it’s a low ceiling and lack of resources — whatever the reason, our clients often find themselves trying to create stunning spaces, but just not knowing how to work around design challenges to get the look they want.

During the design phase for a current project, we selected statement light fixtures that wouldn’t overcompensate on a low ceiling. We all love a bold look in large volume spaces, so we wanted to give our client fixtures that carried the same impact, but didn’t throw off the scale and balance of the rest of the space. The result was so darn good that we had to share a round-up of our favorite low profile light fixtures.

10 Interior Design Trends Taking Over 2018

The days are flying by as fast as the interior design trends are coming. January felt like trend scouting month as we dashed from airport to airport to check out the latest trends in the world of interiors for our interior design clients. With fresh editorial on the shelves and our hands full of design inspiration, here are 10 new interior trends taking over 2018.

The Pulp Edit: February 2018

Tufted sofas are everything and we can’t get over how much depth a little traditional or channel tufting adds to a space. This space, designed by Nate Berkus and photographed by Chris Dibble for Gray Magazine, is the epitome of why we love tufted furniture so much.

Gucci‘s SS18 campaign is like an illustrative tour of every artist and creator’s dream scape. Fittingly titled “Utopian Fantasy”, we think these illustrations by Ignasi Monreal are worthy of a custom frame and place on the wall.

Marble and brass have both earned their respective spots on anyone’s list of favorite interior design trends, so it’s only fitting that someone combine them into one interesting and artisan accessory. We love the combination of these classics!

self care.001

Self-care is just as essential for your well being as an interior designer is for a coveted space. Not only do we love this photo by Kenneth Willardt from Harper’s Bazaar, but  face masks packaged in the perfect size for travel are a forever obsession, which is why we can’t get enough of the Derm Institute Anti-Oxidant Hydration Gel Masque — always in our travel bags!

This space, photographed by Francois Halard, proves that there’s no such thing as rules when it comes to layered forms and adventurous design. We absolutely love the nod to surrealism in this art studio like loft.

Top Interior Design Trends February 2018.006

Our designs heavily involve  custom textile work, ranging from drapery to pillows so we see loads of interesting trims in our design clients’ futures. We recently laid eyes on this trim by Mokum and can’t wait to use it in a project.

Interesting uses of tile for flooring has been a hot trend for awhile, but this geometric neutral puts a new twist on intriguing floor design. Photographed by Amanda Oster for Gray Magazine, this space is a stunning example of understated luxury.

You heard it here first — blue monochrome is the new black and white. A burnout velvet by the Romo Group and a new favorite light fixture from SkLo are inspiring a new wave of monochrome in our current projects.

We believe in using every possible surface and furnishing as an opportunity to add interest to our clients’ spaces. This table base is all of our “flair for the unexpected” dreams come true, photographed by Chris Dibble.

Wood panels as a backsplash? Yes, please. Photographed by Max Kim-Bee, this space is another simplistic, yet stunning way to create interest in a space.

In summary, 2018 is the year of interest. Innovative applications of traditional materials and unexpected details are key to the most interesting spaces this year.

How to Style Bedside Table, Nightstand Essentials

13 Things Everyone Should Have on Their Bedside Table

Selecting and styling bedside tables for our interior design clients is so much more than just picking something that looks nice. Design is nothing if it doesn’t elevate your everyday life, so finding a way to make our clients’ spaces look incredible while giving them all the function they could imagine is the top priority of our “Splendid Living” approach. Follow these tips for the most restful beauty sleep of your life…

Designer Tips for a Perfectly Styled Bedside Table

  1. Start with lighting. Absolutely no bedside table is complete without the right lighting. A table lamp will help create focus and give your space the right lighting for winding down at the end of the night.
  2. Give it personality. An artisan catchall and small coffee table books will give your bedside table the ultimate touch of personality. Use the catchall for function and books to inspire and add style.
  3. Add a notepad. Keep a small notepad nearby for those genius ideas that come to you in the middle of the night. You never know what brilliant idea you could forget!
  4. Get your beauty sleep. We like to keep our favorite overnight masks  close by to replenish our skin as we sleep. A nourishing skin treatment that can be left on overnight will help you relax — all sleep should be beauty sleep!
  5. Get relaxed. Make your bedroom the ultimate retreat by adding an essential oil diffuser for aromatic relaxation. This will keep your space smelling amazing and improve your quality of sleep!

5 Wallcoverings We Installed This Month

It’s been the month of wallcovering installs for our interior design clients and we wouldn’t want it any other way. We have a myriad of projects in the works, ranging from small but impressive city apartments to whole-home renovations, but if there’s one thing they all have in common, it’s that statement wallcovering is the name of the game. Whether we’re going for understated luxury or eye-catching contrast, a wallcovering will bring personality to a space like nothing else.

Beautifully plastered on everything from living room walls to entryway ceilings, these are five of our favorite wallcoverings installed in January…

6 Dynamic Sources for Layered Drama

Our first step of the interior design process is getting to know our clients through our Splendid Living approach. After we have an in-depth idea of who they are and how they live in their space, we take all of our clients’ dreams and desires and start designing.

It all starts with a scheme. This is where we pull together textiles, finishes and accessories into one pretty picture to give our clients a sense of the space that awaits. We recently shared this freshly pulled together scheme and everyone had questions about the sources behind this dynamic design. We love each piece so much that we thought we’d share six of our favorite sources to this work-in-progress…

Scheme Sources.001

Every room deserves a beautiful wallcovering. We selected the Coffered Wood wallcovering by Phillip Jeffries to bring dimension and interest to this space.

Scheme Sources.002

There’s no such thing as rules when it comes to layering in pattern and texture. A vibrant and rich textile for custom pillows, like Feline from Kelly Wearstler, will give this space an extra touch of personality.

Scheme Sources.003

Our signature is design with a flair for the unexpected. We never skimp when it comes to making a major splash in a client’s space, which is why the Feather Fan wallcovering from Schumacher is one of our favorites.

Scheme Sources.004

Spaces need grounding neutrals to help bring the rest of the design to life. S. Harris is a go-to when we are sourcing anything from unforgettable statement to subdued monochrome for our clients. This neutral textile adds necessary texture and warmth to the scheme.

Scheme Sources.005

With a scheme that’s so full of drama, we went for the Hawthorne Albescent tile by Tile Bar to bring this design to completion. Can you say tile goals?

Scheme Sources.006

Last, but certainly not least, Gilded by Schumacher is a total showstopper textile. We are obsessed with this because it layers in both texture and pattern, but can still feel perfectly understated.

It’s so satisfying to watch each piece of a scheme come to life install by install! Our clients love getting to see ideas and inspiration come to life in their own homes.

8 Tips to Creating the Perfect Bath Experience

We are huge fans of taking 20-30 minutes at the end of the day to relax and soak in a nice and hot bath. It’s necessary to designate some quiet time to yourself each day, or as often as possible, to destress and detoxify. A bath is an easy and luxurious way to treat yourself to some well-deserved solitude, especially when you add in the extra goodies to make it like your own personal spa.

Beyond interior design, you could say we’ve become experts in taking the perfect bath. Follow these 8 tips for ultimate relaxation…

  1. Set the mood. Start by lighting a couple of your favorite candles and gather all your bathing essentials in one spot. Make sure your towel and robe are nearby and start running your bath.
  2. Make sure the temperature is right. It all comes down to preference, but I like it just hot enough that the water stings just a bit when getting in. A little on the toasty side means it’ll stay perfectly warm for the duration of your bath.
  3. Detoxify. I typically skip all the bubble baths and fancy products and opt for epsom salt. If you’re soaking regularly this will give your body to chance to detoxify and reset. Plus, an epsom salt soak is amazing for sore muscles after a tough workout. Add about two cups to your running water.
  4. Supplement your soak. Depending on your needs, add in a few supplements to your bath. I like to add a couple drops of essential oils if I’m not using any other scented products. Oils can be great for skin needs and can help you sleep or feel energized, depending on the type you select. And of course, if my skin needs  little extra hydration, I add in milk bath or a touch of coconut oil.
  5. Always double fist. It’s super important to stay hydrated since your body will be prone to sweating out toxins. I always drink an entire glass of water while I’m in the bath. That being said, I also keep a little mood setting drink nearby. If I’m really trying to detox. I’ll drink tea. But for most nights, it’s wine or whiskey.
  6. The right read. Whatever you do, stay unplugged. Instead of using your phone, grab your favorite book or magazine and relax.
  7. Mask yourself. Once a week, I use my bath time as an opportunity to add in a beauty treatment. I either do a face mask or a hair mask that can stay on for more than 30 minutes — this is usually a hydrating treatment.
  8. End on a good note. Make sure you take that relaxation with you when you leave the bathroom. Lather yourself up with a great moisturizer after getting out of the bath and wrap up in a cozy robe.

You’ll Never Believe This Modern Bathroom Transformation

Oh how we love a good before and after, especially when it’s this dramatic. We took a dated eye-sore of a bathroom and completely transformed it in a floor-to-celing renovation to achieve our interior design client’s dreams of a modern bathroom with a nod to the home’s structural history. A few simple details and a major floor plan update gave this bathroom the ultimate facelift.

“This long-time Pulp client recently moved to Portland and called us after purchasing a new home. Even though we were working from afar, we were able to take our evaluations from the first site visit and design exactly what our client hoped for– a modern bath with the Pulp touch.”

“The before and afters of this bathroom are almost too good to be true. Not only did we give this space a major style update, but we moved the shower and vanity to create a more sensical layout for our client.”

“This home was built in the 1920s, so when we started designing we knew we wanted to pay homage to the historical style of the building somehow. This wallcovering could not have been more perfect for this project. It’s modern and bold  with an Art Deco edge that gives the entire space an artisan flair.”

“What we love most about this bathroom is how it exemplifies so much character but still feels so modern and clean. The floor tile created one of those details where someone enters the space and immediately thinks, “Oh my gosh, where did you find these?” Novel details set against the white and bright shower gives the ultimate punch of personality.”
