6 Dynamic Sources for Layered Drama
Our first step of the interior design process is getting to know our clients through our Splendid Living approach. After we have an in-depth idea of who they are and how they live in their space, we take all of our clients’ dreams and desires and start designing.
It all starts with a scheme. This is where we pull together textiles, finishes and accessories into one pretty picture to give our clients a sense of the space that awaits. We recently shared this freshly pulled together scheme and everyone had questions about the sources behind this dynamic design. We love each piece so much that we thought we’d share six of our favorite sources to this work-in-progress…

Every room deserves a beautiful wallcovering. We selected the Coffered Wood wallcovering by Phillip Jeffries to bring dimension and interest to this space.

There’s no such thing as rules when it comes to layering in pattern and texture. A vibrant and rich textile for custom pillows, like Feline from Kelly Wearstler, will give this space an extra touch of personality.

Our signature is design with a flair for the unexpected. We never skimp when it comes to making a major splash in a client’s space, which is why the Feather Fan wallcovering from Schumacher is one of our favorites.

Spaces need grounding neutrals to help bring the rest of the design to life. S. Harris is a go-to when we are sourcing anything from unforgettable statement to subdued monochrome for our clients. This neutral textile adds necessary texture and warmth to the scheme.

With a scheme that’s so full of drama, we went for the Hawthorne Albescent tile by Tile Bar to bring this design to completion. Can you say tile goals?

Last, but certainly not least, Gilded by Schumacher is a total showstopper textile. We are obsessed with this because it layers in both texture and pattern, but can still feel perfectly understated.
It’s so satisfying to watch each piece of a scheme come to life install by install! Our clients love getting to see ideas and inspiration come to life in their own homes.

8 Tips to Creating the Perfect Bath Experience
We are huge fans of taking 20-30 minutes at the end of the day to relax and soak in a nice and hot bath. It’s necessary to designate some quiet time to yourself each day, or as often as possible, to destress and detoxify. A bath is an easy and luxurious way to treat yourself to some well-deserved solitude, especially when you add in the extra goodies to make it like your own personal spa.
Beyond interior design, you could say we’ve become experts in taking the perfect bath. Follow these 8 tips for ultimate relaxation…
- Set the mood. Start by lighting a couple of your favorite candles and gather all your bathing essentials in one spot. Make sure your towel and robe are nearby and start running your bath.
- Make sure the temperature is right. It all comes down to preference, but I like it just hot enough that the water stings just a bit when getting in. A little on the toasty side means it’ll stay perfectly warm for the duration of your bath.
- Detoxify. I typically skip all the bubble baths and fancy products and opt for epsom salt. If you’re soaking regularly this will give your body to chance to detoxify and reset. Plus, an epsom salt soak is amazing for sore muscles after a tough workout. Add about two cups to your running water.
- Supplement your soak. Depending on your needs, add in a few supplements to your bath. I like to add a couple drops of essential oils if I’m not using any other scented products. Oils can be great for skin needs and can help you sleep or feel energized, depending on the type you select. And of course, if my skin needs little extra hydration, I add in milk bath or a touch of coconut oil.
- Always double fist. It’s super important to stay hydrated since your body will be prone to sweating out toxins. I always drink an entire glass of water while I’m in the bath. That being said, I also keep a little mood setting drink nearby. If I’m really trying to detox. I’ll drink tea. But for most nights, it’s wine or whiskey.
- The right read. Whatever you do, stay unplugged. Instead of using your phone, grab your favorite book or magazine and relax.
- Mask yourself. Once a week, I use my bath time as an opportunity to add in a beauty treatment. I either do a face mask or a hair mask that can stay on for more than 30 minutes — this is usually a hydrating treatment.
- End on a good note. Make sure you take that relaxation with you when you leave the bathroom. Lather yourself up with a great moisturizer after getting out of the bath and wrap up in a cozy robe.

For Your Home Spa
You’ll Never Believe This Modern Bathroom Transformation
Oh how we love a good before and after, especially when it’s this dramatic. We took a dated eye-sore of a bathroom and completely transformed it in a floor-to-celing renovation to achieve our interior design client’s dreams of a modern bathroom with a nod to the home’s structural history. A few simple details and a major floor plan update gave this bathroom the ultimate facelift.
Modern Art Deco Bathroom

“This long-time Pulp client recently moved to Portland and called us after purchasing a new home. Even though we were working from afar, we were able to take our evaluations from the first site visit and design exactly what our client hoped for– a modern bath with the Pulp touch.”

“The before and afters of this bathroom are almost too good to be true. Not only did we give this space a major style update, but we moved the shower and vanity to create a more sensical layout for our client.”

“This home was built in the 1920s, so when we started designing we knew we wanted to pay homage to the historical style of the building somehow. This wallcovering could not have been more perfect for this project. It’s modern and bold with an Art Deco edge that gives the entire space an artisan flair.”

“What we love most about this bathroom is how it exemplifies so much character but still feels so modern and clean. The floor tile created one of those details where someone enters the space and immediately thinks, “Oh my gosh, where did you find these?” Novel details set against the white and bright shower gives the ultimate punch of personality.”

This project was featured in Gray Magazine — see the feature! We also shared the 5 essentials behind this stunning transformation. Don’t forget to check out the entire project here.

12 Interior Design Must-Haves in the 2018 Pantone Color of the Year
We’ve given ourselves a few weeks to simmer on the Pantone Color of the Year 2018 pick, but the time has finally come. Purple can be a difficult one to pull off, especially when it’s as purple as ultra violet. But, when it comes to a good product roundup we’re not ones to shy away from a challenge. Our design team searched the depths of the web and our online shop to find the most stylish picks in the Color of the Year. These pieces make us think maybe the color isn’t all that bad after all…

3 Things You Need to Consider Before Using White Marble
Oh white marble… it’s a centuries old mark of luxury that we doubt we’ll ever get tired of. Heck, if the Italians used it in just about every structure, it must be good, right? We know we’re not alone in this love affair with a nice slab of sparkly white stone marked to perfection with dreamy grey veins, but we often find our contractors and interior design clients hesitant to make the leap.
Now you might find yourself wondering why anyone would opt out of a luxurious modern bath decked from wall to wall in hand-selected Carrara, but there are a few considerations to ponder when it comes to using this classic material.

The grounding factor of this sometimes hot debate is the wearability of a white marble. We revisited an interview with marble expert, Melissa Patterson of Renaissance Tile & Bath to get to the bottom of the Great Marble Debate.
Here’s the deal…
There are three questions you should ask yourself when selecting marble.
1. What’s the application? Marble is a natural product, so it’s going to change over time no matter the application. However, you should think about the traffic and frequency of contact the marble will encounter in your design– if it’s on a floor, expect signs of wear from foot traffic; If it’s on a countertop, consider the possibility of stains and rusting.

2. What is your attitude? Some of our interior design clients need a product to look pristine and untouched even after years of use, and others don’t mind signs of life-lived on their materials. Both are valid attitudes, especially when you invest in your home, but consider what Patterson calls the European and American attitudes. “When you enter a European building, you can walk on the stone floors that are centuries old. Here in America, everything is roped off. I think that Europeans live more causally and enjoy the patina created from use and aging, where as some Americans want everything a bit more pristine.” What do we take from this? Do as the Romans do.

3. How do you live? This is potentially the most important question to consider when it comes to selecting absolutely anything for your home. It’s a grounding principle in our approach to interior design — if it doesn’t work with or elevate your lifestyle, than skip it. Because acids from food and beverages can tarnish the appearance of marble if let to sit overnight it’s important to think about how you live in the space you are considering a marble finish. Are you the type of homeowner who picks up after yourself after each use in the kitchen? Or are you an on-the-go homeowner, where a kitchen counter wouldn’t get wiped down until the next morning?
All that said, we love white marble. There’s just nothing that feels quite as luxurious and dreamy as an impactful piece of marble.
