Sit + Sip: The Commander-in-Chief

Elections are a weary thing and this one has been no exception. But no matter your political alliances, I think we can all get behind a solid drink and cozy seat! This appropriately named cocktail sounds especially tasty. So, what do you say? Let’s all sit back, relax for goodness sake, and enjoy the freedoms of living in such a wonderful place as the USA!!

Habitat for Humanity Design Duel Challenge… Cast your VOTE!!

You may have heard murmurings of an unusual project that the Dallas team has been working on recently. Well, the cat is out of the bag now and the full reveal can be found online!!

Carolina, myself, and Scott Rampley teamed together to take on Dallas Area’s Habitat for Humanity 2012 Design Duel Challenge. Our team had a small budget and could use ONLY what was available at Dallas Habitat ReStores, including paint, materials, tools, furniture, and accessories. It was most certainly a challenge and we had to get really creative and innovative. When fabric was no where to be found, we sewed draperies out of shower curtains. Then when extra storage was needed, we built window seat benches out of kitchen cabinetry turned sideways!

Here are a few behind-the-scenes shots of our installation project day on Saturday.

It took the whole team plus the help of the homeowners to make our concept a reality but we made it through!

Our opponents in the contest are certainly worthy! Breck and Charles of Breckinridge/Taylor abided by the same rules and put together a really cool space as well. You can see “Before” and “After” photos of both spaces on the Design Duel webpage.

But this is a contest after all, so we want to ask for your vote. Keep that voting pin on for one more day and CAST YOUR VOTE for PULP DESIGN STUDIOS HERE!!

We sure do appreciate it!

How to Tea… A Pulp Guide for Tea-Drinkers

There’s not much that I love more than sipping on a hot drink in the late afternoon over some inspiring piece of literature, like my favorite blogs or current pile of magazines. When I’m not drinking unhealthy amounts of coffee, I’m usually indulging in a carefully prepared cup of hot tea.

Now, you may think tea is simple, right? Boil water… dunk tea bag… wait, then drink. Almost! But there’s actually a little more to it. So, today I’ve compiled a few guidelines and resources to get any tea-drinkers out there a strong start in the right direction. Once you have the basics, it’s really quite simple.

FIRST, heat your water in a kettle. (preferably cast iron)

SECOND, choose your tea. (there are endless varieties and something for everyone! loose-leaf tea is often the highest quality and can be purchased in bulk. it gives deliciously full flavor!)

THIRD, scoop the appropriate amount of leaves into a strainer and place in your cup. (the amount of leaves will depend on the amount of water you will be steeping your tea in. for a full instruction chart, visit HERE.)

THEN, remove your water from the heat BEFORE it boils. (if your water is too hot it can burn the tea leaves and damage the flavor.)

NEXT, pour your barely hot water over your tea strainer and let it steep for no more than 5 minutes. (some teas may take less time to steep. leaving your leaves in the water for too long can make them bitter in taste, so beware!)

FINALLY, add your choice of sweetener or creamer. (i prefer honey and love a cool glug of creamer as well.)

DON’T FORGET, to store your tea leaves in an air-tight container!

Tea Brewing Shopping List:

THE KETTLE

THE STRAINER

THE MIXERS

THE CUP

THE SWEETENER

THE CREAMER

THE ALTERNATIVE

THE STORAGE CONTAINER

And that just about does it! You’re on your way to being a true tea-drinking aficionado. If you’re interested in taking your brewing skills to the next level, read up on more specifics from Teavana (my favorite tea company) HERE.

PULP Designs VS Breckinridge Taylor with Habitat for Humanity

Maybe you’ve heard murmurings around town (here and here) or perhaps you’ve been watching our Twitter feed. Either way, you may know that Carolina and a select Dallas team will be participating in this year’s Habitat for Humanity Design Duel (yes, “Design Duel“!… we’re so ahead of the curve).

This will be the duel of the year, folks!! We’ll be battling against fellow Dallas designers Breck Woolsey and Charles Taylor of Breckinridge Taylor for bragging rights as the “Top Designer” of Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity’s “Design Duel.” Each team is assigned to redesign two finalists’ living/dining areas sourcing exclusively from Dallas Area Habitat ReStores and using a $3,000 budget in a three-week time frame. Phew!! Think we can do it?

Before we get started, though, Habitat for Humanity needs your help. Do you live in the Dallas metroplex? Need a new interior look? Then you’re in luck!!

Enter to win this awesome makeover online at www.designduel.org or in-store at one of the three Dallas Area Habitat ReStores, located at 2800 North Hampton Road in Dallas, 3546 Forest Lane in Dallas, and 451 West Interstate 30 in Garland by September 14th. Provide your personal contact information, up to three photos of your living/dining area, and a short paragraph on why you should be chosen for the makeover for a chance to win one of the two final spots. Five semi-finalists will be selected and their entries posted to www.designduel.org where consumers will vote for two finalists who are most deserving of a redesign.

Our design team will be paired with one super lucky finalist who has the most compelling home entry and then the magic will begin! After the redesigns are complete, a panel of local judges – including interior designers and media personalities – combined with a percentage of public votes will determine the ultimate “Top Designer”.
Ding. Ding. Ding. (wish us luck!!)
