How to Create a Soothing Master Bedroom

The design of your home can completely change your mindset and set the tone for your day. Since your Master Bedroom is a sanctuary, creating a soothing space can go a long way toward making your life feel a little more zen. Once you have a beautifully designed space, we’re sharing a few tips to personalize your space to create a soothing master bedroom below.

Tips for a Soothing Master Bedroom

1. Appeal to your sense of smell. Don’t just make the room just visually appealing —  there are other senses to simulate, as well. Light some incense, burn a candle, or use a diffuser with a relaxing essential oil.

2. Don’t forget about the importance of sound.  Use a white noise machine or listen to relaxing music. But, don’t forsake the importance of acoustics. If you live in a home that’s in the city or on an active street, drapery and upholstery can go a long way in dampening sounds you want to drown out to keep your bedroom feeling like an escape.

3. Create a place for “me” time. Create a reading nook, vanity for makeup application and face mask time, or a spot for away-from-kids conversation with your spouse. A master bedroom doesn’t have to be all about sleeping — deck it out to make it feel like a retreat within your own home.

4. Invest in quality textiles. By choosing luxurious sheets, plush rugs and extra-soft throws, your master bedroom immediately becomes a sanctuary. In a place where you spend so much time — like your bed — opting for the a little luxury here makes a lot of sense!

5. Make your bedroom a no-fuss zone. Turn off your phone, limit TV to intentional viewing, and stop all ‘shop talk’ once you enter the bedroom — turn it into a space just for relaxing.

6. Fill it with spa-like luxuries. Get a silk eye mask, a cozy robe, and a diffuser with essential oils, and other spa-like pieces. Slip your eye mask on and breathe in… You’ll instantly feel relaxed.

7. Add plants. Plants naturally clean the air, while adding some visual life to our spaces. Add a stylish planter and your favorite greenery for an extra pop of zen.

8. Use ambient lighting. Different types of lighting work well for different purposes and ambient lighting, like table and floor lamps, go a long way to set a mood.

Our 7 Favorite Sculptural Accent Tables

This month, we’re focusing on art and the incredible impact it can have on a space. We believe art and accessories are necessary for making a home feel finished — it’s our rule of the final 15 percent. We love creating designs using necessary pieces — like tables and light fixtures — that double as works of art. Our interior design team is sharing their current favorite sculptural coffee tables and accent tables below.

“The juxtaposition of the natural wood with the exquisite grain matching and angular cut-outs are completely swoon-worthy. Plus, the option on the left could absolutely double as a magazine holder for those of us who are publication-obsesssed.”

Pulp in Progress: A Modern Monochromatic Home in Seattle

As part of our Three-Step Design Process, we are taking you on a tour through projects that are currently in progress. It will be a fun look into who we’re working with, what made them want to hire a designer, and how we are working with our clients to help solve some key design challenges that will improve their daily experience. Plus, you’ll get a glimpse at some of our designs before they’re completed!

Step 1: Consultation + Intake

BEFORE-2

BEFORE-1

BEFORE-3

Q. WHO IS THE CLIENT AND WHAT IS THEIR SCOPE OF WORK?

A busy executive with kids, our client had recently moved into a new home that was designed by a prolific architect in the ’80s, just before the architect passed away — it’s a residence of importance. Our client’s new home was modern, whereas her old home was traditional — so her furnishings didn’t fit with the style of her new home. Starting a new phase of her life, she wanted to redefine what her personal interior style looked like. She reached out to Pulp to help define that through a minor interior facelift and all new furnishings.

Q: WHY DID THE CLIENT DECIDE TO HIRE AN INTERIOR DESIGNER RATHER THAN TAKING THE PROJECT ON THEMSELVES?

In need of a fresh start, our client knew that she wanted to completely refresh her home and her furnishings but didn’t know where to start. On top of juggling both parenting and her job, she just wasn’t sure how to describe her style or to give her home the polished look she wanted. She needed help from a professional in defining her personal style and executing the design, so bringing Pulp on was the perfect solution!

Step Two: The Design Phase

unspecified-4

Here’s where we took everything we learned from our client at our consultation and intake process and put all that information and our creativity to work for our clients. We started really getting to know our client and her kids, and what their lifestyle looked like. Then we started by gathering inspiration from our client in the form of a Pinterest board and began to collaborate between our offices on the design.

Q. WHAT IS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE NEW DESIGN?

Our client’s fashion sense, paired with the modern architecture, was really our inspiration here. Designed by a well-known local architect, the bones of this home are clean and modern — our client’s old furniture was highly traditional and didn’t fit her style. Through thorough interviewing and our Splendid Living approach, we found that she was highly drawn to black, white and gray. Her wardrobe consisted of primarily those colors with pops of color thrown in through the accessories, so we knew that designing her home to reflect that aesthetic would be the perfect fit for her and her family.

Step Three: Installation + Execution

We recently installed phase 1 of this hip project and will be completing the final install soon! In the meantime, here’s a little teaser from the first install…

Transforming a Stairwell with Wall Covering

We’ve been with this interior design client since the beginning, from working with the client as the house was being built to filling it with gorgeous pieces. We consulted with the home’s builder to make sure that the home reflected our client as much as possible while choosing from limited finish options. While we’re still in the process of adding the finishing touches, we wanted to share a sneak peek of the stairway… It’s incredible the impact that adding wall covering can make on a space.

The Pulp Edit: May 2017

It’s no secret that we’re in love with art at Pulp Design Studios — we firmly believe that a room will never be finished without art and accessories, the final 15 percent. This month on Pulp Editorial, we’re sharing everything we love about art — see our top 10 interior design trends for May 2017 below.

Pulp-Edit-Blurb-May-2017.001

Wietzner’s recycled wall coverings — made by hand from recycled content — have an artisan feel that can’t be replicated by machines. The gorgeous colors of this Cinema Posters wall covering feel like art in and of itself… The whole piece is so lavishly detailed.

Pulp-Edit-Blurb-May-2017.002

Pollack FabricsOn The Fringe collection has completely stolen our hearts. This lust-worthy collection of intricate fabrics are an amazing departure from Pollack’s tried-and-true essentials line… This fashion-forward line is making us swoon.

Pulp-Edit-Blurb-May-2017.003

A Lebanese ski resort home owned by Nicholas and Michele Garzouzi features a mirror-walled bathroom with a massive tub made out of Iranian titanium travertine. Featured in Architectural Digest and designed by Thierry Lemaire, the smooth lines of this carved tub are completely drool-worthy.

Pulp-Edit-Blurb-May-2017.004

Featured in Elle Decor and painted by Marina Adams, these pieces are filled with radiant hues and smooth geometric designs. We’ve been falling in love with richly colored artwork lately, and these pieces made us fall head over heels.

Pulp-Edit-Blurb-May-2017.005

We can’t help but fall completely in love with these iconic hand chairs designed by Pedro Friedeberg, featured here in Kelly Wearstler’s L.A. home office as shown in Architectural Digest. The design is now completely iconic — a conversation piece, this chair began its story as a joke but is now lusted after by every fashionista.

Pulp-Edit-Blurb-May-2017.006

Travel can be the catalyst for the best art — beyond being an incredible source for unique pieces, traveling through new cities and experiencing cultures allows you to seek inspiration.

Pulp-Edit-Blurb-May-2017.007

We’ve long been in love with bone inlay — it’s such an elegant touch that elevates everyday objects, like the coffee table in our Jewel-box Townhouse project and the breakfast nook table in our Eclectic Abode project. These bone inlay accessories are completely swoon-worthy.

Pulp-Edit-Blurb-May-2017.008

There’s something so beautiful about the way that natural materials wear over time — the way that hair-on-hide pieces begin to bald naturally or that metals begin to grow weathered and green. This copper stairwell in the East Hampton office of Bates Masi, featured in Interior Design Magazine, will begin to oxidize over time, hinting at its history.

Pulp-Edit-Blurb-May-2017.009

This cleverly placed piece of art  could easily hide a television or speakers when not in use… Just add some sliders to the back of the frame and you’ve won the mounted TV versus focal art piece argument. Featured by Elle Decor, this West Village apartment was designed by Work + Sea — painting by Madeleine Huttenbach.

Pulp-Edit-Blurb-May-2017.010

This elegant, refined room finds a breath of fresh air with this casual-cool portrait. Sophisticated tufting and opulent materials balance perfectly against this piece, making the room immediately feel more personal. We used this approach in our Relaxed Luxury project, pairing an elegant living room with a focal point painting of an unmade bed. This design was featured in Interior Design Magazine.

With an expert eye, curating art can immediately make a room feel opulent. Thinking about art as more than just paintings is a must — as designers, we find beauty in materials, shapes and juxtapositions within the design. Of course, a room never feels finished without art and accessories, but our top 10 trends this month find art in both classic artworks and everything else.
